The 2018 NYFW is one of the biggest events of the year, being the pinnacle of international design, styling and fashion. But, what we couldn’t stop looking at was the jaw dropping, toned physiques walking the catwalk! We’ve never seen so many abs during the Helmut Lang, Marc Jacobs and Jeremy Scott shows!. It’s no secret that the girls and guys of NYFW work extremely hard on their bodies, but how (and we mean HOW) do they get them?!
Well, it turns out they’re all wrapping their knuckles and stepping into the ring…
One of the most striking faces in fashion at the moment, and half of the seemingly unstoppable sister duo, Bella Hadid has found her way onto the catwalk of Versace, Dior, Fendi and countless other couture labels at this years NYFW. To walk these shows (and not to mention, strut her stuff wearing only lingerie in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show) Bella has a rigorous workout and diet regime.
She told Vogue Paris in an interview earlier this year that when preparing for a show, one of her go to workouts is cardio boxing – and lots of it!
“When time is on my side, I train with my coach for intensive sessions. I run non-stop for 20 minutes followed by a boxing session and finally a series of weights targeting the abs and glutes. We keep the routines varied, so the sessions are always fun.”
The main reason? It keeps her lean, “sculpts her curves” and gets her those infamous “washboard abs”, which she says is because of “nothing other than boxing and a series of targeted ab workouts”.
When she’s not working out with her trainer, her sister Gigi is also known to step into the ring (sometimes up to twice a day) in preparation for a show. At New York’s Gotham Gym, a favorite sweat-spot for celebrities like Cara Delevingne and Hailey Baldwin, Gigi works hard with gym owner and her personal trainer Rob Piela.
Her striking figure, toned arms and incredible abs can be put down to her strict diet and (you guessed it) a bad ass boxing routine.
Besides just regular boxing, Gigi’s trainer spoke to Vogue about their supermodel routine in a recent interview. Piela runs the Guess model through circuits of cardio boxing, resistance exercises and strenuous floor work, switching back and forth, shredding through calories whilst building lean muscle. He says “staying fit is all about consistency”, and from the looks of her in the 2017 NYFW, Gigi’s definitely been keeping it up.
Other international models like Olivia Culpo, Adriana Lima, Gisele Buchen, Helena Christensen and Candice Swanepoel are pairing cardio boxing with resistance and circuit training in order to sculpt their bodies and stay lean.
Lima owes the last 10 years of her enviable figure to boxing, working out at least twice a week at the elusive Aerospace Boxing Gym in New York. Before a show, Lima’s trainer Michael Olajide, Jr. puts her to the test in multiple 90-minute workouts every day. Their workout follows a similar routine as the Hadid models including shadow boxing, glove work, bodyweight-resistance and strength-training exercises. The strength component is especially important to keep her toned and make “her butt really pop”!
The number of boxing studios in Asia and the Middle East has been on the rise over the past few years, but very few have adapted to this cardio, strength and technique formula that’s tearing through body fat and building muscle (in all the right places).
