You’ve heard of Vinyasa, Yin, Hatha and Power Yoga, but might be wondering what that class labeled ‘Kundalini Yoga’ really is. With more an more focus in the Yoga community coming back to inner focus and self-preservation, Kundalini Yoga is quickly becoming a popular practice for many Yogis… We sat down with Kundalini expert Guru Jagat to ask her a few questions from members and the GuavaPass team.
Firstly, what is Kundalini?
Kundalini is your innate life force.
What does a Kundalini practice entail?
Kundalini Yoga works your whole being—according to our tradition, you have 10 bodies—not just a physical body. A typical practice entails physical movements, breath, sound, meditation, and gong relaxation. You’ll experience all of these elements in depth at the Capella Retreat August 10-12 2018 – find out more here.
Where did the “yogic technology” originate from?
Yogic technology is a phrase I started using to describe how the practice of Kundalini Yoga actually works. Everyone knows that if you open the GPS app on your smartphone, you can use that app to route yourself from one place to another with the most efficiency. Kundalini Yoga works the same way. If you breathe in a certain pattern or hold a particular posture for a given length of time, you’re not just doing something “spiritual”. You’re actually adjusting your glands in a very nuanced way and opening up an “app”, so to speak, of happiness or contentment or clarity or what have you. How Yoga works have been shrouded in mysticism for centuries. And while Yoga can deliver a very mystical experience, it’s not all that far out – it’s scientific and simple!
Why do you think we are seeing a rise, particularly abroad, in the popularity of this specific style of movement and mind training?
Kundalini Yoga is the fastest growing Yoga practice on the planet right now because people are looking for a practice that’s effective, accessible and fast acting. In just three minutes of Kundalini Yoga, you can change your whole experience. Try this practice to see what I mean:
Kundalini Exercise for Quick Upliftment
Also known as Aerobic Capacity & Efficiency Kriya
POSTURE & BREATH: Sitting cross-legged, grasp the ankles with both hands. Inhale sitting tall. Hold the breath and begin flexing the spine forward and back with the breath held in. Keep the head steady. Flex the spine until you need to exhale. Then come to center and release the breath. Breath in again and begin flexing once more.
EYES: Close the eyes and focus them up and in between the eyebrows.
TIME: Continue for 3 minutes.
TO END: To end the exercise, inhale center, exhale and relax.
What are some of the immediate and long-term benefits of Kundalini?
From just one practice of Kundalini Yoga, you’ll feel instantly more fresh, clear, energized, relaxed and more like yourself. Longterm benefits include a massive relaxation of the mind, as well as quicker more creative thinking, radiant anti-aging and vibrant health, better relationships (with yourself and others) and a sense of wellness that you just can’t buy or bottle.
Why is it so important for women to be practicing Kundalini?
Women hold the vibrational frequency of their families and the world. A woman who is strong, self-secure, engaged in her own personal care as well as the care for others, and reverent for her own self and beauty will create healing communities, children of leadership and have spouses that thrive.
Not only that, but a woman who is engaged in deep practice and is able to commune with other women will find within herself the fulfillment she has always been seeking.
It’s why I’m so thrilled to bring IMMENSE GRACE YOGIC BEAUTY SECRETS WEEKEND to the Capella Hotel & Spa, August 10-12, 2018. It will be an immersive opportunity for women to luxuriate In Aquarian Age wellness techniques, holistic beauty rituals & yogic rejuvenation and truly engage with the deepest parts of themselves. I’m also over the moon that this weekend retreat will take place over a New Moon – Solar Eclipse, making it an extra potent window for transformative and rejuvenation.
If you could encourage everyone to do just one meditation/Kriya which would it be, and why?
Over time, this meditation will restore positive brain chemistry, rid you of bad habits, create radiance in the skin and bring you into a prosperity stream you could not have even imagined. Practice daily and experience a positive shift right away, with deeper miracles revealing themselves over years:
POSITIVE CHEMISTRY MEDITATION
Also commonly known as the Kundalini Addiction Meditation.
POSTURE: Sit cross-legged or in a chair with both feet flat on the floor
MUDRA: With both hands, curl your fingers into the pads of your hands— not into fists, just down so that the fingertips are resting right on top of the pads at the base of each finger. Leave your thumbs extended, and place them on your temples.
BREATH AND MANTRA: Breath ins a normal, relaxed way. Mentally repeat the sounds Sa-Ta- Na- Ma. On each sound, press your back molars together. You should feel something move underneath your thumbs. Keep going.
TIME: 3 minutes.
TO END: Inhale, gently squeeze the back molars, exhale and relax
So… do we have to wear white and a turban?
Definitely not! Kundalini Yoga is a come as you are in practice. If the technology of wearing white or a turban uplifts you in some kind of why (white expands the aura and turban science can enhance meditative concentration) go for it. But Kundalini Yoga is a powerful practice that it will shift your mind-body experience regardless of your outfit. So wear what makes you feel good!
Any final comments you wish to share with GuavaPass readers?
Kundalini Yoga is for everybody. It’s for moms, dads, men, women, octogenarians, and newborns. Kundalini is meant to give you— in the throes of changing diapers, changing jobs, getting married, buying a house— enough energy so that regular life is invigorating and joyous. In Kundalini Yoga, the path of ordinariness is the path to your own royalty, reality, and happiness. It’s why it always touches me when I have people in their seventies or eighties in the same room as teenagers, which is almost every class! Kundalini is for real people with real lives. The only barrier to entry is your desire to willingly participate in changing your life
