Matcha is all the rage these days! We see it everywhere – in our lattes, desserts, smoothies and even facial masks! What exactly is the big deal about matcha?
What is Matcha?
Matcha literally means “Powdered tea”, and is essentially a special form of finely grounded Green Tea. Matcha is traditionally drunk by mixing a teaspoon of matcha powder with 1/3 cup of hot water before being whisked with a bamboo brush until it’s frothed.
Why is it so good for you?
Matcha has a never-ending list of health benefits and since the whole leaves are being consumed, it has much more nutrients than normal green tea. Matcha contains high levels of antioxidants called polyphenols which are known to protect your body against heart disease and cancer, and also help better regulate your blood sugar level, reduce blood pressure and has anti-aging properties.
For those who are looking to lose weight, good news for you! Matcha is one of the most potent sources of catechin, an extremely powerful chemical. It promotes weight loss by increasing the amount of energy your body uses throughout the day, prompting your body to tap into fat stores. Studies have found including catechins in your diet can increase the speed at which you lose weight from %80 to %100, in conjunction with a low sugar diet and regular exercise. The catechins from Matcha especially can help you target the fat around your abdominal area
And for those who exercise regularly, matcha has shown to increase one’s performance and may also help to quicken muscle recovery, thus allowing you to exercise more frequently.
How you can incorporate Matcha into your diet
You can drink it the traditional way, with just solely hot water, or you could add foam milk to turn it into a matcha latte, or simply add a teaspoon or two to your morning smoothie/oatmeal to add a nutty taste and healthy twist.
