Describe a typical day for you, starting from when you wake up:
I normally run early (5:30 AM) to get in some alone time before the kids wake up. Then come home and get all the kids ready for school uniforms, lunch, backpacks. After dropping them to school I head to FIRE! I teach and train 1-3 classes (the classes I teach are STRIKE, STRIKE HIIT, STRIKE KICK, STRIDE, and RIDE).
Then I do some meetings and work. As the Marketing Director at FIRE, I oversee promotions, collaborations, creative content development, and events.
At about 2:00 PM I head to school to pick up my kids. The rest of the day is taking kids to activities, playdates, and homework. With 4 kids there is a variety of activity in my house, and never a dull moment. At any given time there is between 5-10 kids in the house! Our neighborhood is a revolving door of kids and activity. Dinner time and bedtime are wild and chaotic. When my husband comes home from work, he jumps into the mix of homework and bedtime routine and does a fabulous job of getting calm kids, hyper again! My friend once described big families as “just more of everything”. More love, more laughs, more tears, and more fights! That’s us! The Tolman Tribe!
How does keeping fit keep you mighty?
I believe strongly that the body and spirit are intimately connected. Having a strong, healthy body helps me not only physically keep up with my 4 kids, but mentally and spiritually as well. I can run, jump, climb, swim, and chase freely with them. Not only can I keep up with them, I can lead the pack! The discipline and strength I have to be fit and healthy is hopefully setting an example for them.
What is your secret weapon?
STRIKE classes at FIRE! You can walk into class with all kinds of stress, worry, and fatigue, but when you leave, you are transformed into HAPPY MAMA! Punching and boxing is a cathartic release for me and I always feel ready to start the day and take on any challenges motherhood or work can bring.
What is your biggest tip for moms wanting to start their fitness journey, or to stay focused on the journey they’re on?
Do something, or work to find something you love. If you find that passion, working out will not become a chore it will become the highlight of your day. Working out should be social, fun, and hard work! If it’s not hard, you won’t get results and you’ll quit. This is what we do at FIRE and how we program! It helps too, that so many trainers at FIRE are moms ourselves. WE know what it takes to get fit post-baby and we know how to help you.
How important is keeping your kids active, and what do you do to encourage it?
I see my role as a mother to find what each of my kids loves to do to stay fit. Not all of them will love soccer, or love swimming – one may love to dance or hike. I just try to expose them to as many opportunities to find their fitness passion. I teach kids classes as SPARKS and am motivated 100% by my own kids to create the class.
I love to take them to work, and to spend time with them weekly, while we all get fit together. The kids have so much fun, and come to appreciate my work more. I didn’t want FIRE to be this place that I go and leave them behind, so the kids class SPARKS was the perfect solution! Being fit is a family affair!
Who is your Mighty Mom idol?
To be honest, I don’t really obsess or idolise any fitness celebrities or elite athletes, I feel they have teams of photographers, dietitians, private trainers, and chefs that I don’t really relate. My Mighty Mom ideal would be my own sisters! They are fit and strong AND are working to raise gorgeous families is the real world (collectively 7 kids). I look up to them and am inspired by their fitness journeys (one has discovered Yoga, and the other Crossfit). They are strong and beautiful, but they never lose touch with their most important role of raising strong children.
