Many men we talked to before, mistakenly think group classes are all about dancing. We wanted to prove them wrong.
So it seemed right to throw the task to someone with a slightly below-average interest for fitness, who’s a scared of change and likes to spend weekends at Club Vista Mare. After some convincing, Simon accepted the challenge to review a few GuavaPass Studio Partners in Dubai.
We told Simon to try classes that he normally wouldn’t have signed up for if it wasn’t for GuavaPass. For the coming few weeks, Simon will be our dedicated GuavaGuy and share his stories here on our blog. Enjoy the show!
As everyone knows, Thursdays in Dubai usually involve a “few drinks”, no dinner and a whole lot of regret/shame/self-loathing. However, I thought I would take a different route this week and attend one of the circuit classes at Warehouse Gym. With a new gym opened in JBR, this chain of gyms was one I wanted to check out.
To be honest, when I walked in, I didn’t know whether to start poppin’ n lockin’ or to bust out a spray can and graffiti my GuavaGuy tag on the wall. On closer inspection the place has everything. From a boxing ring and bags to gymnastic rings and much more. This is one of the best-stocked gyms I’ve been to in Dubai.
I signed up to the Gone in 60 Seconds class. Apart from knowing it was a circuit class I had no idea what to expect. When the circuit on the board involves numbers as high as 100 reps (as warm up!), you know you’re in trouble. However, this was a refreshing change from classes which deem 30 seconds of star jumps as a sufficient warm up.
The class involved 4 stations, 2 of which were cardio and 2 focusing more on strength. Each of the strength stations had 3 different exercises, one for each minute. As per any circuit class, the more you put in, the more you get out. So by the end of the second circuit, I was dead. At this point, the last thing you want to hear is “just one more exercise to go”. Nonetheless, after a 400m run and 350 mountain climbers, I was done.
At this point, the class did a typical Dubai does faux pas; no cool down. After a few mediocre quad and hamstring stretches, I was deciding whether to go out or get a takeaway.
If you’re looking to get a nice aerobic high before the weekend, this class is great. Cool gym, good instructor, a great way to start the weekend.
