Keep challenging yourself
We should never be afraid to try new things or push ourselves out of our comfort zones. A life lived in complete security is entirely lacking in adventure and authentic experiences. On Chōsen retreats we always encourage participants to challenge themselves, perhaps by attempting an unfamiliar activity like surfing, parkour, white water rafting, cliff jumping or even a cooking class. If you don’t challenge yourself, you’ll never grow or develop as an individual.
Never stop learning
Whether it’s developing a new skill or exploring a subject you don’t know much about, learning new things, no matter what age or life stage you’re at, is the best way to keep life fresh, wondrous and adventurous. Scientific studies have shown that engaging in new and challenging activities is essentially akin to exercising our brains so that they stay healthy and strong and are better able to ward off degenerative conditions like dementia and Alzheimer’s. This, of course, means that we can enjoy a high quality of life for longer, but just as importantly, learning a new skill – be it drawing, dancing or deep sea diving – is fulfilling in the moment and adds an element of personal adventure to everyday life.
Make an effort to meet new people
A key reason we started Chōsen was that we believe meeting and building connections with amazing and inspiring people from all different walks of life is one of the best ways to continuously grow and develop as individuals, and ensure our lives are not becoming stagnant or siloed. Everyone you encounter has the potential to teach you something new, to act as a mentor in passing. And helping those you encounter to grow and live their ideal lifestyles is fulfilling in the most special of ways.
Make time for life
In modern life, we too often sacrifice our time, health and emotional well-being for money, stability and perceived accomplishment. But what good is societal praise and material possessions if you’re unhappy? A quote that we treat almost as a mantra is, “when you are old and rich, you will give 100% of your wealth for just one day of youthful health.” None of us can afford to wait to live the lives we want, if adventure is what you seek from life, just get out there and open yourself up to it – adventure will soon find you.
