Let’s face it, the scruffy look can only successfully be pulled off by The Hemsworth brothers, a young Leonardo Dicaprio and David Beckham on a good day. For most men, a few simple routine grooming habits make a world of difference – the operative word here being ‘single’ meaning you don’t have to spend hundreds on a 10 step routine, just follow these few rules to get that clean, sharp look every day.
1. Comb the locks
You don’t have to lather, rinse repeat every day – but you do need to keep that mane in good form. Rinsing your hair every day should be followed by a comb through with a simple styling product (such as Mitch Reformer Texturizer by Paul Mitchell Men). It’ll leave you looking finished even if you walk out of the house in sweats and a T-shirt.
2. Tame the stubble
Don’t let all that work you just put into the top of your head be ruined by the bottom. Impeccable facial hair is one service a number of traditional barbers will insist on for every man, but it doesn’t need to be that complicated. Whether you’re going for a full Jared Leto style, a Bradley Cooper subtle stubble or a babyface Chris Pine vibe, keeping your facial hair in check is a must for well-groomed men.
3. Manage your other locks
It’s not just the hair on your head that matters. If you’ve got a fair amount of body hair, some light manscaping can never be a bad thing. You might be proud of your masculine locks but be sure that your partner will appreciate a bit of self-care in that region. Word to the wise, in addition to your facial shavers, invest in an electric shaver Groomer like the Philips Bodygroom series.
4. Clean those pores
Morning and night – that’s all you need to do. Get your hands on a gentle facial scrub to clean out any stubborn dirt or oil once every few days. Other than that, a daily gentle face wash is more than sufficient. Make sure you go over your T-zone a few times (the forehead, along your nose and underneath your bottom lip) as this is where a lot of oil and bacteria build up, especially for men. Try out Harry’s Daily Face Wash for an every day clean.
5. Protect that face
After your wash, apply a simple moisturizer with added SPF to limit sun damage throughout the day, as well as reduce the damage you’ve already sustained (prior to starting this grooming regime!). Over time this will even skin tone, reduce redness and will help you look 30 when you’re 50. One good choice is Perricone MD Photo Plasma SPF 30 which is light enough you won’t notice it throughout the day.
6. Get your scent
We’re all adults here. It’s probably time you throw out that half-empty bottle of store bought cologne your mum gave you for your last birthday. Scent is an extremely important part of memory. You’d probably still remember smells from your childhood if you were exposed to it. The same works for your cologne – own the memory people have of you.
7. Brighten those dark circles
Under eye cream isn’t only for women. There are hundreds of products on the market now that can help you battle the result of one too many late nights or a particularly strenuous week at work. Dabbing a small amount underneath your eye in the morning and evening will make you look more alert and alive throughout the day. Most eye creams work either with added caffeine or Vitamin K in the treatment to lift the skin and reduce darkness. If you’re lost for products try MenScience Eye Rescue Formula.
