Spin classes or indoor cycling is known as the ‘Mother of all Cardio’ because of its insane intensity, amount of calories burned and its low impact nature. The enviable model figures of Karlie Kloss, Adriana Lima and Alessandra Ambrosio are all the result of resistance training for muscle growth and regular spin classes for a toned, lean body. At Anthem, their goal is to use music, lights and exuberant energy from the instructor to turn their signature spin classes into a performance of your own strength, endurance and capability. Today’s Anthem45 spin class was one of the hardest classes I’ve tried, setting the bar high for all other spin classes to be taken. Anthem45 sessions are a full body workout, incorporating light weights and entire body movements to create a dynamic, interesting and empowering session.
A stylish, efficient and effective 45-minute workout
The Anthem45 class was perfect for me – an intense, 45-minute HIIT session that I can easily fit in during my lunch break, seeming a lot less confronting than an hour–long session after work. Placed on Level 3, 66 South Bridge Road, the studio is a stylish and clean space with white walls, futuristic lighting and a peaceful balcony for members to relax on at their leisure. Upon arrival, you’ll be provided with your size in professional bike shoes and shown around the spacious change rooms and the dark spin studio with rows of fluorescent spinning bikes. Grabbing a set of weights as heavy or light as you desire, the instructor shows you to your bike and the class begins to mount their bikes in preparation for the powerful 45-minutes ahead.
The new Anthem to your workout
When the music began to pick up after the first few minutes, the class got straight into a set of sprints, incorporating periods of being out of the saddle, weaving from side to side and taking your hands off the bar. Anthem is rightly named because of the instructors use of music to guide you through movements whilst being your own personal motivator. The session had periods of sprints and rest as the music picked up and slowed down, making it easy to follow on, keep in time and push yourself. The instructor will indicate the level of resistance you should be at, but ultimately you choose how hard you want the session to be.
In competition with yourself
Encouraging this is the leader board on a clear flat screen that shows you your bike data including current and overall performance in RPM, intensity and power produced by your bike. Watching the needle tick over from ‘medium’ to ‘high’ energy output from your bike was fantastic and a unique type of encouragement, one I haven’t experienced before. The small and focused movements with the weights were an additional workout, with approx. 10 minutes of the class focused on working your upper body whilst still on your bike.
The class was pushed till the last second of the intense 45 minutes and the feeling of accomplishment was obvious from each member at the end of the session. Anthem45 is one of the many signature classes at Anthem, with each session offering a different experience with the same enthusiasm and energy.
