After a few days of yoga, Pilates and bootcamps, I was keen to try out something a little bit more expressive. GuavaPass gives members access to a number of fantastic dance studios, and I was more than ready to try one of them out. Jing and Rachel (JR of JR Fitness) have been running their studio for 2 years now, with today’s instructor Rachel having over 15 years experience in dancing. Because of their range of styles, Rachel and other instructors at JR Fitness are able to offer members a fantastic range of classes including Zumba, Hip-Hop, Kpopx Fitness, Zumba Fitness and even Kickboxing and Piloxing (with a fun dance element to it). Today’s U-JAM Fitness class was a great 45-minute workout that was challenging and creative, making it the perfect lunch-time break in a stressful day.
One studio, dozens of dance styles
The JR Fitness studio is conveniently located a block away from the Bugis station. It’s a great open space with fantastic speakers and natural light. Being one of their signature classes, U-JAM Fitness incorporated a huge range of styles and music into the number of moves taught. Rachel kept us on our toes by incorporating powerful and impressive moves throughout the class with easy to follow steps and creative combinations. The style of dance would be best described as a mix of hip-hop, jazz and funk, with music from a variety of genres played throughout the class. Having a really expressive dance teacher is crucial to a fun class, and Rachel was perfect for creating a workout that felt more like play. The hour long class wasn’t defined by a specific routine, but was more a exploration of a variety of dance sequences and moves.
A full body workout supported by the best bodies in the industry
Dancing, whether it’s U-JAM Fitness, Zumba or hip-hop, is well known as an amazing cardio workout. Because of the fast movements and the use of your own balance, strength and coordination, this form of exercise is great in developing long, lean muscles as well as burning huge amounts of calories. The bodies of models Candice Swanepoel and Alessandra Ambrosio have been sculpted with the help of dancing in a range of styles.
