If there is ever an opportunity to do kickboxing, boxing or Muay Thai, I am always the first to sign up. These classes are still some of the most intense workouts I’ve done, and in my opinion, one of the best full body workouts. This week, some of the GuavaTeam and I visited Core 360 for a fast paced Muay Thai session that left us shattered (in the best way possible).
It’s all about the form!
The Muay Thai fitness classes were a similar style of classes to others I’ve been to but at Core 360 they have a great focus on form. The class starts with a basic warm up including hip mobility exercises, jump rope to get your heart rate pumping and some ground work with sit ups and push-ups to activate your upper body muscles. Usually in this class they incorporate kettlebells into the warm up to activate the major muscles needed behind powerful kicks. The class is then instructed on a number of technical movements involved in MMA that form the basic foundation for one-on-one combat.
Offense is the best defense
As I’ve found in other self-defence based workouts, there is an equal focus on defensive as well as offensive moves, reiterating basic instinct and self-awareness into each move. By doing this, it not only gives you a more intense workout by increasing overall movement, but it teaches you a lot about your cognitive reactions.
Strike after strike…after strike
After the warm up, we moved onto the bags, trying out a combination of the basic moves. Here is where you’ll need your stamina – with 50 strikes to the bag for each leg, the entire class works through the movements together, struggling (as a team) to push through the last 10 strikes. Along with the roundhouse kicks, we were shown jumping strikes, knee kicks and various punch and kick combos that can be used in sparring. Bringing all of this knowledge and adrenalin together at the end, it was time to partner up and fight (or try to). After everyone landed a few hits (and don’t worry it’s above the belt and below the face) the class came to an end leaving us all somewhere between completely exhausted and wonderfully energised.
More than just a fighting class
This type of workout gives you the perfect high intensity levels of exercise to kick-start your metabolism and develop lean muscle, all the while teaching you the basic moves of fighting. The team at Core 360 teach you on both an individual and on a group level throughout the class to make sure everyone understands the correct form involved in MMA.
