After a particularly long day at work, you might want an alternative to an energetic pilates class or a strong Vinyasa. For these evenings, Anahata Yoga’s Yin Yang 60 is a perfect option, with its elements of Yin and easy flow Vinyasa (Yang), the hour long practice allows you to relax, stretch and still feel accomplished in moving your body. In the small and wholesome studio tucked away behind Arab Street, Anahata Yoga is an oasis of calm serenity away from the daily bustle outside.
Heated and non-heated classes
Located in a row of shop houses behind Arab Street, the Anahata Yoga Studio holds classes in both heated (The Agni Studio) and non-heated (The Bhakti Studio) rooms. Yin Yang 60 is performed non-heated unlike their other Hatha yoga classes. It’s aimed at improving flexibility and centring yourself in your practice and in your day.
Passive tension release and posture improvements
This evening’s class was taught by Sandie, a Vinyasa, Hatha and Yin instructor with over a year of experience in instructing at the Anahata studio. Over the 60 minutes, the instructor walks you through deep hip openers and hamstring stretches to release tension built up by sitting down throughout the day. Incorporating a number of Vinyasa flows, the movements keep your body warm without a lot of strenuous activity. Yin Yang 60 instructor Sandie describes the class as “a passive practice compared to other classes which are more active” using moves that naturally encourage strength, flexibility and correct posture instead of pressuring the body into a pose.
Myofascial release therapy
A great feature of the class, which may depend on the instructor you receive, is the use of massage balls towards the end. By activating trigger points though the practice of Myofascial Release, the instructor directs the class on how to specifically activate and massage certain muscle groups which hold a lot of tension, especially for those who practice yoga regularly. Be prepared for a fair bit of uncomfortability if your muscles are tight but trust me, the feeling of release afterwards is similar to that of deep tissue therapy
Yin Yang 60 usually runs 3 times a week with 2 evening classes, and is a perfect class for beginners or regulars wanting a change from their usual intense flow.

#GauvaTip: The classes at Anahata Yoga Studio usually have 30 minutes between them, so if you have it, take some extra time to use the massage balls on pressure points underneath your shoulder blades, your glutes, your quads and just underneath your hip bone to get a great muscle release.
