Pilates is one of the most popular and successful forms of resistance training in toning your body and developing long, lean muscles. It’s widely endorsed by ballet dancers, models and professional athletes because of its fantastic benefits to flexibility and core strength. The Pilates Plus studio is a small but efficient use of space in Kreta Ayer Road. The space allows them to hold gravity, mat and private pilates sessions – along with calisthenics, equipment circuits, prenatal and stretching based classes.
Slow, steady and strong
Today I took their hour-long Strength Pilates class run by Alethea who used a combination of matt work and light free-weights to activate specific muscle groups. By slowing down movements and targeting muscles, the session became increasingly difficult – from someone who’s bench press is a max 35kgs, I was struggling to finish the final round of chest workouts just because of how focused the movements were.
Creating stability and building stamina
Pilates Plus’s Strength Pilates is designed to build strength and tone all over the body. Their emphasis on back and core stability was great because it encourages the activation of muscles across the entire mid-section. Core work is an essential component to any Pilates class and you will find it incorporated into almost every Pilates Plus session with a few minutes of fantastic and brutal ab exercises to give you that much needed strength. In the Strength Pilates class, foam rollers are often used to make sure there is no stress on the neck or lower back – one of the clients taking the class was in fact healing a slip disk and commented on how comfortable but effective the movements were because of them.
