If you’re an avid yogi, you will understand the importance of a strong and powerful core. It is used in almost every movement in your practice, not only in yoga but is essential in powerlifting, pilates, dance and even spinning classes. Strala’s Core class is a fantastic combination of an intense core dedicated workout and a powerful vinyasa flow which focuses on strengthening the range of muscles across the centre of your body. By using yoga to transition between movements and ground yourself, the 60 minute session is far more effective than traditional crunches and sit ups, giving you an all encompassing back, centre and oblique workout. The studio sits on the side of the river in Boat Quay, with low windows looking out onto the water and natural light pouring in from every angle.
My instructor today, Yani, focused on the challenge within the transitions and the strength required in exploring movement in your body. She tries to look at each class differently and create a flow that is suited to her students whether that may be less intense core or more intense vinyasa. By doing this, it makes your practice more interesting and specific to your needs and desires of the class.
All about the core
Throughout the hour-long class, the instructor instructs you through a flow that isn’t noticeably core dedicated; which was the best thing about the class- the sequence of poses worked my core more than ever but was far more different (and interesting) to any ab session I’ve done before. The class also equally focused on the stretching of the core, not just the flexing of it: this is extremely important in the tearing and formation of new muscles, not to mention the benefits of opening up the side and back muscles to release tension.
Exhausted but energised
At the end of the session, I’ve never felt more relaxed as Yani came around to the students and melted our shoulders into the ground by gently pushing them down, and then making our bodies grown long with a therapeutic pull of the ankles.
