Self defense is a great way to improve your confidence and motivation while enhancing your balance and self-discipline. It enables you to develop a fighter spirit which can help you to achieve your goals in life!
Having only opened at the end of 2015, Immortal Fitness offers a diverse range of martial arts classes. In particular, Immortal Fitness conducts a self defense (beginner) class where a progressive training program is undergone in order to develop spatial awareness. The students learn boundary assertion skills, physical defenses against grabs, bear hugs, pinned situations and other types of assault.
A very useful and must-know move that is taught is how to escape a chokehold. Below are the basic steps you need to know and also demonstrated in the GIF (no Immortal Fitness trainers were harmed in the process!):
- Use your arms and elbow to stop the person choking you: It may seem obvious but it is still important to act quickly and use your arms and elbow in order to stop the chokehold without passing out. Turn 90 degrees away from the attacker and with a clean sweep essentially “chop down” on his arm.
- Strike low: Retaliate by hitting the person’s thigh in order to limit his mobility.
- Launch your elbow into the attacker’s neck: This will shock the person and limit their mobility even further.
- Deliver the final blow: With your wrist and the back of your hand, strike the person’s neck so that he is unable to get up and strike back.
There’s no replacement for taking a self defense class and practicing the moves in real life. So even if you only try it once, come and learn some very useful life skills on how to defend yourself and your loved ones in case you ever find yourself in a dangerous situation.
