Cardio, short for cardiovascular exercise, is a type of exercise which gets your heart pumping and blood rushing through the veins. It’s the kind of exercise with so many benefits, it’s almost crazy why not more people are doing more of it!
Here are the facts that will hopefully motivate you to get your cardio on:
- Makes for a happier heart.
Remember, the cute pink or red shape you see everywhere on valentine’s day is a cute but massively inaccurate representation of your body’s most important muscle! Yes, the heart is a muscle, so getting your heart to work hard is an essential part to your health. Just like any other muscle group, if it’s not worked on, it will weaken.
- Makes for a happier metabolism.
According to Mayo Clinic, “Metabolism is the process by which your body converts what you eat and drink into energy…” this is when the “calories in food and beverages are combined with oxygen to release the energy your body needs to function.”
Challenging your heart by increased cardiovascular exercises spike your metabolic rate and therefore improve your body’s functions.
- Makes for a happier you (actually).
A cardio session is scientifically proven to cause you to produce feel good hormones; also known as serotonin. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter which sends signals between our bodies nerves and is known to help to stabilize mood.
Like experiencing a runner’s high, the body releases serotonin when it reaches a certain level of cardiovascular exercise; creating a chemical balance which leaves you feeling great.
